According to a report by the international organization, academic, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), India has the highest population of illiterate adult is 287 million. The statistics purpose towards the staggering disparities in the academic levels within the country. The illiteracy levels from the year 1991 to 2006 have risen to a 63 %. Illiteracy means lack of inappropriate knowledge or education. It can also be defined as the state in which one is not able to write or read the content. Sometimes people with basic education may also face the difficulties in writing and reading. Some of the challenges of illiteracy cut across race, cultures, age, gender and geographical location. There are some causes of illiteracy such as Illiteracy among elders, Lack of reasonable academic facilities, Poverty, Non supporting family, Less awareness, Barriers offered by society. In rural areas many of the people have not gone through the basic education which makes them unable to read and write. Many of these uneducated people do not give much stress on the value of education. People who live in villages with lack of education facilities may remain uneducated. Due to the unavailability of nearest school these people don’t find it worth to go very long by walking just for study, so they prefer to stay at home only. Hence lack of reasonable education facilities has supported the large no of uneducated people. In some places due to the lower income poor cannot afford to pay the school fees of their children. Number of illiterate children is higher in the areas where basic education is not free or compulsory. Dyslexia is a condition in which family members are unable to understand the child’s condition of difficulty in writing or reading. These kinds of disabilities should be overcome with help of family members.
There are some consequences and disadvantages of illiteracy such as Poverty, Stops social and economic development, hard lives, Child marriages, Social crime, Unemployment, less payment. Moreover illiterate people are not able to acquire any kind of knowledge from magazines, books, newspapers, etc. Hence they cannot learn anything new through reading or understanding the text. These illiterate people do not know well their duties and rights towards their families and society. They don’t aware about the institution and laws of the country which made them unable to get thorough information about the laws of the country because they are not able to read from any written material. Moreover uneducated people cannot get jobs easily in both government and private sector as well. They are not able to initiate their own work. Overall these uneducated people cannot develop well in their life which in turn made them unable to promote country in suitable way.There are some possible measures to control or restrict the illiteracy are Free basic education- Since many of the people are not able to attend the school due to the lack of money or unavailability of resources, therefore providing the free education play a major role in enhancing the rate of literacy within the society. Awareness- Private organizations, Government authorities and other parties put their efforts in delivering the awareness regarding value of education in the society. This would provide the helping hand in reducing the number of uneducated people from the nation. Many of the government foundations can also provide free of cost books in institutions to encourage children to enhance a reading culture. Some scholarships, grants are also helpful in minimizes the financial burden of people so that they can get the education easily. As we know money is the major limiting factor in getting education therefore government provision of Lower educational cost and late night classes are also helpful in removing the illiteracy.
Illiteracy is a real curse for any nation. Near about 95% people are uneducated in India. Education has immense power and its value cannot be neglected. People merely find it is a process of gaining job in the market and earn a livelihood but actually it is more than this in real world. A child tends to have more mental and social development. The lessons taught tend to help them. The experiences help in resolving the problems and develop social intellectual skills and these will help the person in surviving in the society. Hence education is the weapon that can be used to fight any social evil. If we work on Illiteracy, our nation will be out of the curse of illiteracy and will progress well. The community will be better if the no. of people going to school is more. As education has the power to develop the nation therefore we all should aspire to get education.

The Ministry Of Home Affairs organizes a census every 10 years. As per the last census which was organized in 2011 the illiteracy rates are higher in the states such as Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and lower in the states like Kerala, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Tripura and Goa. India is place of highest population of uneducated adults in world that is 287 million, amounting to 37% of the global total. Despite being the fact that India has the world’s largest population of illiterates, India Literacy rate has increased 6 times since the end of the British rule (12%- 74%) in 2011. Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh are amongst the top five states in terms of illiteracy of Dalits. 60 lakh children in India are still out-of-school. In which 47.78 % children are girls and in the coming census report they will be come under illiterate women. This would be act as a ripple effect on the education of their children. 92% government schools are yet to fully implement the RTE Act. India is ranked 123rd out of 135 countries in female literacy rate. The percentage of women to the total number of school teachers has gone up from 29.3% in 1991 to 47.16% in 2013-14.
